I was contacted in 1999 by my clients who had come across a spectacular site in their search for a property in New Zealand, located at Tauranga Bay overlooking Whangaroa Harbour and the Cavalli Islands. From my first contact with them and initial site visit I knew something special would be needed to complement such an incredible place. Standing on the cliff top, feeling the wind rush over the land and out to sea and seeing the large numbers of swallows circling this 200meter high volcanic outcrop, I was inspired to design the house to the form of these graceful birds.
In line with the Zen approach of my clients and a love of the work of Starck, the brief for the house was to be simple and clean in form and style, keeping cupboards and storage spaces to a minimum and utilising limited space by building in most of the furniture.
The northern face of the house is glazed from roof to deck, with staggered glazing forming the east and west faces, thus taking full advantage of the sea views to the east and contrasting country side valley outlook to the west, while the main central access view takes in the glorious sight of Stevenson Island some 4km offshore.
The entire building has been constructed from steel framing and cladding with large Perspex domes, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior.
